21st Century Community Learning Centers Enriches Children & Teens In Nine Clubs

21st Century 2

Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County has been in partnership with 21st Century Community Learning Centers, a federal grant maintained by The Florida Department of Education, for over ten years now. The BGC maintains 6 grants that allow operations at 9 Club locations.

The 21st CCLC program provides at least one hour a day of academic enrichment in the form of Project-Based Learning, as well as supplements many of the BGCA national programs including homework help, tutoring, prevention programs like Character Counts, technology programs like Robotics, music and art programs like Readers Theatre, and health and fitness programs like Healthy Habits and Martial Arts. 21st CCLC also encourages family participation by providing adult literacy programs and family night events in which 21stCCLC participants display the final product of their project-based learning activities.

Project-based learning is a NEW approach to afterschool academic enrichment. It’s a super fun way for members to develop 21st Century skills: creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, information and communications technology, citizenship, life and career, and personal and social responsibility. Project-Based Learning begins with a “driving question” developed by the group that is aimed to solve a real-life problem or issue that they might face in the real world.

One of the upcoming projects is titled “Whodunnit?” where participants will solve a dramatic mystery using two different types of evidence to determine which is most accurate. At the end of the project, a “Mystery Theatre” Family Night will be held where participants will implement scientific and human judgment techniques learned while investigating evidence throughout the Whodunit? unit to solve the mystery themselves or to assist families and friends in solving the mystery.

These projects are very comprehensive and your child is a key component to their success. The program runs until 6 pm and we ask that you keep this in mind when you are coming to pick up your child. Full participation is the key to your child receiving all the wonderful benefits this program affords!!
