History:

In Delray Beach’s inner city, youth have historically had few positive alternatives for their leisure time, resulting in juvenile crime and poor school performance. In recognition of the need to give youth a safe alternative, local leaders from the private and public sectors joined forces to open the Boys & Girls Club of Delray Beach in 1994. The Club is now located in a new 21,000 square feet building which opened in May 2005. This clubhouse includes a learning center, computer lab, arts & crafts center, game room, teen center, kitchen and gymnasium.

• Game room, outdoor play areas, arts & crafts room, technology center, snack bar, library.

Programs:

We offer daily access to a broad range of programs in six core program areas: character and leadership development; education and career development; health and life skills; the arts; sports, fitness and recreation, and technology. Here are a few examples of some of these programs:

• Daily homework help

• Job Ready program

• Computer education

• Golf

• Cooking lessons

• WXEL reading program

• Arts & crafts

• Tennis

• Nutrition & Health

• Smart Moves prevention curriculum

• Summer camp

• Spring/winter break camps

Fees:

• $20 annual membership fee for school year program

• Affordable fees for extended programs (summer/spring/winter)

• Nominal fees for van transportation

• Scholarships available

Membership Profile 2005-2006:

• 533 members

• Average daily attendance (school year): 191

• 1200 total youth served through regular programs and outreach

• 58% boys, 42% girls

• 81% African American; 5% Caucasian; 5% Hispanic; 2% other

• 75% of the youth served live in non-traditional or single parent households

• 87% are served by no other youth organization

• 63% of our members live at or near the poverty level
